It’s been a terrible year for earthquakes. Quakes in 2010 alone have accounted for 250,000 fatalities – most of which, of course, happened in Haiti – this was, according to Wikipedia, the sixth largest earthquake in recorded history. It’s apparently not an anomalous year, in terms of number of large tremors – but the problem has been that they’ve been hitting more populous areas, and Haiti particularly was horrifically unprepared. Regardless, it’s hard to realize how many there have been – 65 earthquakes of 6.0 or over, 7 of which were 7.0 or over – and not, in some small superstitious part of my brain, think of the whole 2012 thing.
